Book Description:

"Maya’s shocked to discover it’s not the heaven she imagined; in fact, a life of adventure begins the moment you die.

Zachariah, her faithful spirit guide, explains the rules of the dead: in order to regain complete awareness and reunite with loved ones all souls must review their previous lives.

Maya plunges warily into her turbulent pasts as a sociopathic High Priest in ancient Egypt; an independent mother protecting a dangerous secret in glorious Sparta; an Irish boy kidnapped and enslaved by Vikings; and a doctor’s wife forced to make an ethical stand in plague-ridden England.

All the while, Maya yearns to be with those she cares about most and worries that she hasn’t learned all of heaven’s most vital lessons. Will she be forced to leave the tranquility of heaven to survive yet another painful and tumultuous life? Or worse, accept the bitter reality of having to go back alone?"

Excerpt:

"He dies before dawn. Covering him with a shroud, I tuck a coin in his hand for burial. I take a black flag from a vacant house to signal Ulric. Instead of returning to the abbey, I walk down to the river to watch the sunrise. A cold breeze blows, and I pull my hands within the fluted sleeves of my cloak. The giant sun breaks the horizon with an ember glow, causing everything around me to burn red. Even the river shimmers crimson. Something catches my eye—objects drifting on the surface, breaking the reflection of the water in flashes. I bring my hand up to shield the glare, and I'm horrified to see dozens of naked, bloated, blue bodies floating down the Thames.
I turn to walk home as someone screams out, shattering the silence of the city, "The Apocalypse is here!"
    He might just be right."

Blog Tour Spot...The Realm Between Heaven & Hell by J.S.Turner

The Realm Between Heaven & Hell
By J.S. Turner

I was 25 years old before I figured out what I wanted to be when I grow up. I am not sure why it took me so long to take my love for writing seriously. After all, I have been at it for as long as I can remember. I remember the day I received my first journal and how great it felt to have someone finally understand me!  I have a desk full of binders and folders packed with the beginnings of stories, ideas and tidbits. Writing is who I am.  I guess the idea of doing what you love was a foreign concept
to me, but not anymore!  ~Jessi

 Excerpt:

Pregnancy was fun for Dawn.  She transformed her extra bedroom into a nursery.  She painted the walls bright yellow and the borders light green.  Her mother bought her a mahogany crib and a jungle-themed crib set.  When money allowed, Dawn bought stuffed baby animals and soft, plush, pastel blankets.  What she enjoyed most about the pregnancy was that it was Tucker-free.  After a few weeks in prison and finding out about the pregnancy, he wanted nothing more to do with Dawn.
She turned around, smiling after hanging a cloud, sun, and moon mobile on the side of the crib.  She happily wiped her hands on her yellow sundress with satisfaction on finishing another project.  Her calico cat meowed by her bare feet; she carefully bent over and picked him up.
“I feel like my life is finally turning around, Jimmy Bean,” she whispered into the scruff of the cat’s neck.  He pawed playfully at her banana-shaped earrings before she bent over to put him back on the nursery floor.
“Ughh,” she grunted as she tried to push herself back to her feet.  Ughh,” she said as she collapsed onto her knees.  It felt as though someone had punched her in the stomach, and in an instant, a stomach cramp brought her down onto the floor.  She felt the inside of her thighs grow warm.  She brought her shaking hands to her face and screamed when she saw they were covered in blood.  She knew she was going to lose the baby.

Excerpt:

When he hit, he hit hard.  He knew better than to hit her face.  He used her body for a punching bag.  One hit after the other, until sweat beads dripped off his nose.
“If yew eva,” he said with another swift kick to her stomach, “eva lie to me again . . .”  He came down on one knee to meet her on the floor, and with his rough hand pushed her hair, wet with tears, off her face.  He looked deep into her scared eyes.  “. . . I swear to yew…”  His red hair was wet with sweat and laid heavy on his head and his green eyes searched her face for another reason to hit her.   Dawn lay paralyzed, afraid to move, afraid to breathe, silently praying for the beating to be over with.  He grabbed her hair into a tight fist and pressed her head deep into the carpet, “I’ll kill ya!“
He caressed her face and kissed her gently on the forehead before getting up.  He towered over her crippled body, watching her for a few seconds.  She knew better than to speak.  She knew better than to whine or sniffle.
Just lie still, she told herself.  You did a great job.  He will be gone in a minute.
While putting on his jean jacket, he checked his square face in the mirror and ran his fingers through his damp crimson hair.  He turned as he reached for the doorknob.
“When I get back, this mess better be cleaned up.”  He opened the door and closed it silently behind him.  Dawn lay soundless on the carpet as she listened to his heavy boots make their way down the porch steps.  She lay dormant and waited to hear him fire up the engine to his black, souped-up, ’64 Chevy Short Bed.  She stayed still until she could no longer hear the pounding of his muffler.  Once everything was quiet, she took a deep breath and yowled in pain.  She rolled into the fetal position, hands holding her ribs.  Through stifling sobs, she began to search for her phone.  It lay only two feet away from her on the carpet, next to the broken coffee table.
Reaching for the phone was almost as painful as the beating itself.  It would be easier to die she thought as she stretched her right arm over her head.  Her forearm cracked loudly as her fingers used the loops in the carpet to creep her body closer.  She screamed in agony.  With a broken arm, she managed to grab the phone and pull it close to her.  She paused for a moment before dialing.
“If yew ever call the police, I’ll kill yew!”  She heard his words as though he were right there, spitting them in her face.
“I wish you would,” she whispered before dialing 9-1-1.
This was the first time Dawn had ever called 9-1-1.  As she lay there in a pool of tears, waiting for the ambulance to come, she wondered what had ever taken her so long.
